POONCH: Time and again published by “POONCH TODAY” that the Poonch police have no strong policy against drugs, and the same was proved again the other day when Poonch police officials, under a visible feeble plan, carried out raids at multiple locations and picked up several people, but later all of them were freed.

This raised a big question mark on the Poonch police officials who were involved in the formulation of this feeble strategy. On the one hand, nothing concrete came out of the raids, and on the other hand, the reputation of the police has suffered to some extent. Locals alleged that without any concrete policy and not taking local intelligence agencies of the police on board, the drive was planned to pick up those involved in drugs. Now the question arises: Why were those picked up earlier allowed to go home later? Shockingly, drug terrorism has spread its tentacles in almost every area of the district, but the police were seen raiding those areas that are not hotbeds of drugs. Drug peddlers are seen roaming in different areas of the city, but they were not touched for years. Locals, while talking to “POONCH TODAY,” said that a number of youngsters were picked up by police on suspicion, but later, they were freed. It raised a big question mark on the top brass of Poonch police, who seem to have no strong policy against drugs. A prominent citizen of Purani Poonch, pleading anonymity, said, “Police officials were seen shooting in the air as they had no proper clues about those involved in drugs. This was not the way that one should enter any house and start picking youngsters without any sound input.” Although the initiative of police against drugs was good and also led to some breakthroughs in an old drug case, the weak output of the raids shows that no strong policy was formulated by the officials of the Poonch police before carrying out the raids. As there was heavy deployment of police at some locations, nobody was aware of the actual strategy of the police, but when the exercise was concluded, everybody was surprised to know the questionable approach of Poonch police against drugs. The coordination between different wings of police is not concrete, and it’s a big concern from an internal security point of view. After this questionable exercise of police, people of Purani Poonch were planning to hit the roads against police, but timely intervention of some people helped in defusing the situation. Although the drug terrorism has captured the entire district in which hundreds of people are involved, the weak initiative of the police and lack of professional dedication among the police officers, right from the top to the bottom, show that those involved in drug terrorism have an upper hand over the police, and this is the reason that they are doing their business without any fear of law. If the Poonch police officials have not achieved a big success by eliminating the drug terrorism network completely, then expecting Poonch police officials to prove heavy overrevival of terrorism and other antisocial and antinational activities in the district would be a big security concern for a common man. Coordination between different police agencies from range to district level, which is missing right now, is badly needed to achieve big breakthroughs in countering various anti-national fronts, including drug terrorism. There are numerous challenges for Poonch police in the district from an internal security point of view, and only a highly competitive team could come up to the expectations of the people. It is high time for the J&K government to intervene by placing men of professionalism on the important and operational fronts to counter all challenges, including the ever-rising drug terrorism.
