JAMMU: Amid chanting of ‘Bharat mata ki Jai’, ‘Vande Matram’ and other nationalist slogans, the newly formed Sangarsh Samiti has launched its much-hyped agitation over the 42 seats allotted to students of a particular community on the basis of merit in the medical college of SMVD University.

The members termed the incident as most unfortunate and said that they will not allow the institution to work against the interest of Jammu, as the institution runs on the grants from the SMVD shrine board. Although it’s just the start of another agitation, as Jammu is known for witnessing agitations every ten years on various issues of Jammu’s importance, the political pundits and thinkers see this as an attempt to plead for the case of a separate Jammu state. They believe that for over seven decades, Kashmir dominated the politics of J&K, and this fact is not digestible to the people of the Jammu region, who witnessed utmost partiality during the reins of successive J&K governments.  It’s an important fact that both the regions have different aspirations, which makes it difficult for the people to come closer to each other because the Kashmir region never supported the nationalist sentiments, while the Jammu region always stood for the national interest and communal harmony. The pain of mass migration of Kashmiri Pandits and other nationalist forces from Kashmir and other anti-national acts from the soil of Kashmir still resides in the minds of the Jammu people. On the other hand, the people of Jammu always stood for communal harmony and brotherhood between all the sections of the society, but the same was murdered openly in Kashmir, but still the political affairs in the erstwhile state of J&K and now UT are always dominated by the Kashmir-based politicians. A prominent Sangarh samiiti member, pleading anonymity, told “POONCH TODAY”, “Enough is enough. Our nationalism and communal harmony need not be taken for granted by anybody. Even the BJP, which won huge seats from the Jammu region, always ignored the real issues of the Jammu region. We are not going to stop unless we get our much-awaited due.” When asked about whether it’s an attempt to fight for the separate Jammu state, the member said, “Let’s see what will happen in the future, but we cannot rule out this issue as well. We want complete justice with the Jammu region, and the term “justice” means everything.” As the Sangarsh Samiti has launched its agitation, there are reports that a similar fight on the issue of reservation is on the cards from the soil of Kashmir, as the sitting NCs MP Syed Aga Ruhullah Mehndi has already indicated that after the end of parliament’s session, he would sit with the youngsters to fight for their genuine cause. So, both the regions are brewing up for a likely mass agitation on these different issues of Jammu’s and Kashmir’s interest; it would be interesting to see how the Union and J&K UT governments will address the issue, as both the likely agitations need not to be taken lightly by anybody. When “POONCH TODAY” contacted a powerful BJP leader on this issue of Sangarsh Samiti agitation, he said in a lighter mood, “Kyu janab, hamara CM bhi toh banna chaiye jo Jammu ki baat kar sake.”
