SRINAGAR: The result of the Budgam assembly constituency shows that Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has become the emerging face of Kashmir politics. Aga Ruhullah, who became an MP on the NC’s mandate, started showing his discontent with the NC’s leadership on the issue of ignoring the real issues of Kashmir, including restoring statehood after the NC came to power with a thumping majority.
Many times, he said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has failed to fulfil his promises made to the people before the assembly elections of 2024. The war of words between Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and NC leadership crossed all the limits, as the chief minister Omar Abdullah also felt political uneasiness during the election campaign in the Budgam assembly segment, which was considered as home ground of Abdullah’s. Political observers believe that the immature statements of Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary against his rivals always proved negative for the National Conference, and the recent Budgam assembly result is one of the proofs. It is pertinent to mention here that the Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary indirectly targeted Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi when a media person asked about his comments on the impact of Aga Ruhullah in the Budgam assembly constituency. Reacting to the media person, the Dy.CM said, “Kaun Aga? Kaisa Aga? That very statement proved a disaster for the National Conference that lost its traditional seat to PDP. During the victory procession of PDP candidate Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, who took 21,576 votes against NC’s 17,080 votes, people were seen shouting slogans in favour of MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, and it clearly indicates that Aga Ruhullah Mehdi has gained some popularity in Kashmir politics because of his strong stand against NC’s leadership. Former J&K BJP president Ravinder Raina also took a jibe at Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary. Raina said that NC had lost the seat the same day when the Dy. CM Surinder Choudhary taunted Aga Ruhullah, questioning him with remarks like “Kaun Aga? Kaisa Aga?” Bechara Dy. CM NC ko lee dooba. If the DyCM wants to see more trouble for the party which made him DyCM, then he should continue with his childish and unparliamentarily behaviour, said a senior BJP leader of Jammu, pleading anonymity. Meanwhile, the statements from BJP leaders in favour of Aga Ruhulah Mehdi show that something is cooking behind the curtains, and who knows in which way Kashmir politics will move, as the BJP recently got four extra votes during the Rajya Sabha elections that led the BJP to win one seat comfortably. A young BJP leader, who lost last year’s assembly elections, told “POONCH TODAY” on the phone, “Whatever the political circumstances may be in the near future, one thing is quite sure: Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi needs not to be taken lightly by NC’s leadership and other political parties, as he is becoming stronger day by day. He has the capacity to give a new shape to the Kashmir politics.” Meanwhile , Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, after the Budgam result said that Aga Ruhullah has committed a political suicide. Omar said, “The person who has won from Budgam will not allow Ruhullah again to stand from there.”
