Bridging the Divide- Confronting Rural Health Disparities and Building Healthier Communities: Dr Sushil
Bridging the Divide- Confronting Rural Health Disparities and Building Healthier Communities: Dr Sushil POONCH TODAY...

One of the lower-rung police officials who was also involved in drug-related activities was the main player, who used to script deals for his senior police officer in the police station. With the blessings of a powerful senior officer at the zonal level, the said police officer used to sing different tunes in some cases, eyeing financial favours, and accordingly, many sensitive cases were settled out of the way. Although some complaints against him had reached the top brass of ZPHQ, a few officers sitting in some powerful positions always protected him before paying him back in the same coin. Earlier, some subordinate police officials, who were close to him, used to collect favours from different business establishments and had selected some shops in the area where the concerned businessmen came on specific days to hand over favours to those lower-rung police officials posted in the police station in the limelight for onward delivery to the said police officer. However, he was not in the good books of his immediate superiors due to his professional misconduct, and his superiors also wanted his replacement, but those sitting at the top level were strongly behind him. Taking undue advantage of his strong links at the top level, he used to hit the bull’s eye financially with the help of his touts. He was so shrewd that he had deputed some friends from the fourth estate to collect corruption-related information from various departments with a hidden agenda to silently grill those officers and take hefty favours from them. In return, some fourth estate members close to that police officer also indulged in mischievous activities by blackmailing some departments and local business units by showing the threat of that police officer to win different types of favours. In some cases, the police officer in question openly ignored justice and gave favours to those who remained part and parcel of injustice by settling various deals. A well-known drug peddler who was in the bad books of the police, indulged in a hand-in-glove act with the same police officer, and lately, he was given due respect by the police officer after catching him red-handed. Even the most concerned police officers in the area disliked him, but by abusing his connections at the highest levels, he was able to dictate his own terms. He even recommended his close junior to approach the top brass of the police and pay them several lacs to get a renowned police chowki known for mischievous activities with the sole agenda of earning money. This thing clearly shows that a few district police chiefs used to get hefty favour for giving prize postings to their subordinates. A high-level inquiry is needed against such officers who used to play different roles, eyeing only financial favours, thereby bringing the reputation of police to a low in the eyes of the common man.
