POONCH: Former Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council and senior Congress leader Jahangir Mir, who remained a two-time MLC and one-time MLA Haveli, has sought the attention of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on the Kalaban tragedy and demanded a special package for those families that have suffered a lot.

Jahangir Mir said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah should direct the district administration of Poonch to identify state land for constructing new houses in Mendhar town for the affected families. He stated that the residents of Kalaban have been experiencing unimaginable hardships. He said that the land sinking episode has shattered the hearts and minds of the people, and it would be better if the government found ways and means to construct houses for the affected families with all the facilities. Jahangir Mir, while talking to “POONCH TODAY,” said, “Our central and J&K UT Congress leadership have shown extreme concern over the issue, and I request Omar Sahib to address this issue as a priority, although he has visited Kalaban today to see the ground condition and announced Rs 38 lakh for the affected families in addition to the Rs 50 lakh sanctioned under SDRF, but the people have suffered a lot, and they require all sorts of help from the J&K government.” Mir also requested the Congress leadership of J&K UT and the central leadership to raise the issue with the union government to announce a special package for flood-affected families in the entire J&K and those affected by this land-sinking episode that led to a huge disaster in the Kalaban village. “The devastation caused by the recent flood in different parts of J&K UT has sent an alarming signal for the people not to encroach on water bodies. I request the government to formulate an appropriate policy to avoid such disasters in the future,” said Jahangir Mir. He sought special attention from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on the Kalaban episode and hoped that the affected families would be provided all kinds of help, including construction of houses on state lands.
