SRINAGAR: After an unfortunate incident of a massive explosion at Nowgam police station leading to the death of nine persons and injuring 27 persons, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat (IPS) described it as an accidental and deeply unfortunate incident, confirming the deaths of nine personnel and injuries to twenty-seven others.
The blast occurred late Friday night during the examination of highly unstable explosive material recovered earlier from Faridabad as part of an ongoing investigation. Briefing media, the DGP said the seized ammonium nitrate and related substances had been stored at the police station in accordance with the procedure followed during live investigations. He noted that forensic teams and senior officers were engaged in sampling and technical assessment when the material unexpectedly detonated. Any other speculation into the cause of this incident is unnecessary,” he added. The DGP said the police stand in solidarity with the families of the deceased in this hour of grief. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also expressed sorrow over the tragedy. “Deeply anguished by the loss of precious lives due to an extremely tragic accidental blast at Nowgam police station in Srinagar. My condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for speedy recovery of the injured,” he said in an X post. Meanwhile, to honour the deceased persons, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at PCR Srinagar, in which many top dignitaries, including LG Manoj Sinha, DGP J&K police and others, paid floral tributes to the victims. The government also announced ex-gratia compensation for the affected families. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep anguish and condolences to the bereaved families.
