POONCH: The J&K UT government has reportedly started an exercise to identify those teachers who have gotten jobs and promotions on the basis of “fake” degrees and by adopting the wrong means of getting degrees. The issue of a large number of employees of the Education Department who were having “fake” degrees remained in the news most of the time, and the government, in August 2015,  ordered an investigation of RET teachers, general line teachers, and masters under the domain of authentication in an unsoiled system.

To test the efficiency of RET teachers, the government once proposed screening tests for those who got degrees from study centres through distance learning from unrecognised universities. This issue hit the headlines, and as a result, many protests were carried out against the government earlier. However, the issue was thrown under the carpet due to some compulsion by political governments. But now, LG’s administration has reportedly started an exercise to identify such teachers who have obtained degrees in questionable ways, including by not getting permission. There are some cases in which a few people got jobs on the basis of one degree (valid or invalid), but later, by hand in glove with some clerks, they managed to enter a second degree in their service book for further benefits by throwing dust in the eyes of the government. There are reports that some employees also completed various degrees without taking permission from the government, and it is likely that the government will initiate action against such in-service teachers. Though the investigation has started into the issue of some teachers obtaining degrees with questionable means, the question arises of how many “fake” degree teachers are still working in the Education Department who have not been tackled yet,  were promoted to the next level on the basis of these fake degrees with the involvement of clerks working at important positions over the years. For verification, many committees were formed, but what happened to those committees has remained a big mystery to date. Highly placed sources in the Directorate of School Education Jammu told “POONCH TODAY” that a large number of employees with “fake” degrees will be taken to task in the near future. The government has learned that teachers with fake degrees cannot impart quality education to the students, and as such, action against erring teachers is likely in the near future, said sources close to “POONCH TODAY” in the directorate office in Jammu.  It is important to mention here that, a few years ago, the government followed the directions of the High Court on the issue after a ReT applicant failed to write an essay on cows and also couldn’t solve a mathematics question of the primary standard. In the past, some teachers with fake degrees were also dismissed by the government.  “To provide quality education to the students who are the future of the country, the government needs to ensure a proper scrutiny process for detecting those employees who got everything on the basis of “fake degrees”, say prominent educationists.
