Even some self-styled social workers who have questionable credentials were given PSOs. Some PSOs were reportedly doing different types of household work for these leaders and social workers. Even some low-ranked government employees were also given PSOs, which raises a big question mark about the policy of the police. The majority of them have no history of facing a threat, but some have managed to gain political influence from the top and were able to get security from police even when police were fully aware of their questionable credentials. Many police personnel were deputed with these self-styled leaders, and what would happen during a challenging situation of law and order? Will the police be able to handle any problematic situation with the available force because a large number of PSOs remain associated with these self-proclaimed leaders of the twin border districts? However, after the BG incident, efforts were made by the police to call back PSOs from such leaders and social workers, but still, a lot needs to be done on this issue. The intelligence grid of police in the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri has not tasted success in bringing to book those who were involved in recent terrorist attacks, and it raises a big question mark on the efficiency of those police officers who are holding important posts in the Poonch-Rajouri region. On the one hand, drug terrorism has enforced its tentacles in the region, and on the other hand, the latest Rajouri and BG-type incidents show that Pakistan has been reviving terrorism in this border region. Despite tough circumstances in the Poonch-Rajouri range, little effort was made by the top police officers of the region to change this policy of pleasing a few political leaders and self-styled VIPs other than designated PRIs. Isn’t it a major security lapse to allow a large number of PSOs to protect these self-styled social workers and accidental leaders of various political parties while ignoring the concerns of the general public? Security concerns for the whole region should be the priority of the J&K police, not pleasing a few leaders. The Poonch-Rajouri region requires an all-out war against various forms of terrorism, including “drug terrorism,” and that is possible only once the region gets a set of bold and professionally sound police officers. However, a complete security audit is needed in the twin border districts by the DIG R-P range and SSPs to find out whether those who were provided PSOs really deserve them or not. Only deserving cases need to be considered for security in the interest of proper policing in the sensitive region to meet any emergency-type situation due to the emerging challenges from various forms of terrorism in the wake of the several terrorist incidents in the region and the coming G-20 meeting, which is just a few days away.
