Rise in terror activities! Continuous intelligence failure raises a big question mark for police in the R-P range; Lack of professional officers a big security concern

POONCH/RAJOURI: The Poonch-Rajouri range has become an epicentre of terrorist-related incidents during the last two to three years, but the inability of top police officers in the region to counter the sudden rise in such activities raises a big question mark on their intelligence.

On the one hand, the Dhangri and BG incidents are still unsolved, but on the other hand, the revival of terrorism in the Poonch-Rajouri region seems to be taken lightly, which is an alarming sign. Some police officers were seen beating around the bush about eliminating drugs and terrorism from the Poonch-Rajouri region, but on the ground, they have done nothing other than their on-camera one-sided sermons. Drug terrorism in the Poonch-Rajouri region has spread its tentacles in almost all areas, but police officials, just for face-saving exercise, used to give press releases on low-level recoveries and hesitate to launch a full-fledged war against drugs. Even after recovering drugs weighing 5 grams, police officials were seen giving big press releases as if they had recovered a big consignment, and this futile exercise raises a big question mark on the vision of those sitting at the helm. Terrorism and drug terrorism have become the most concerning challenges in the Poonch-Rajouri region, but the intelligence network of the police has failed till now to detect those involved in this trade, directly or indirectly. In the recent past, many high-level meetings between security forces and intelligence agencies have taken place with an agenda to form a gigantic strategy against the sudden rise of terrorism in the region, but nothing seems to be working on the ground. Top brass of the police have many times said that J&K is almost terrorism-free, but the inability of the police to solve the Dhangri and BG terrorist attacks and not getting intelligence inputs on the revival of terrorism incidents in the region has indicated that those posted on important chairs have no knowledge about how to deal with the emerging challenges related to drugs and the revival of terrorism in the Poonch-Rajouri region. It is important to mention here that the Poonch-Rajouri region was a terrorism-prone region, but after the hectic efforts of security forces, the region was made terrorism-free. But the sudden rise in terrorism activities and drug mafia in the region has raised a big question mark on the intelligence network of the police, especially on the SSPs of both the twin border districts. It’s high time that police officers with visionary, professional intelligence-gathering tactics and a tech-savvy approach need to be posted in the sensitive Poonch-Rajouri range, as the existing set of officers have not shown any big results as far as countering drugs and terrorism are concerned, rather than verbal shelling in the air through their one-sided press releases and press conferences. Rather than celebrating the recovery of 5 grams of drugs and likewise consignments through press releases to get the praise of their higher officers, an all-out sincere war to ensure the complete elimination of drugs and revival of terrorism is required from the police to make the region drug- and terrorism-free again, and for this, the region required performance-oriented, bold, and professional police officers in addition to the activation and formation of a robust intelligence grid to counter all emerging challenges related to drugs and terrorism.
